PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases stamp of National Artist Edith L. Tiempo


The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) released new commemorative stamps to mark the birth centenary (1919-2019) of National Artist Dr. Edith L. Tiempo.

Edith L. Tiempo was a poet, fiction writer, teacher, and literary critic. Tiempo is one of the finest Filipino writers in English whose works are characterized by a remarkable fusion of style and substance of craftsmanship and insight.

She was born in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya on April 22, 1919.

After finishing her bachelor degree in education in 1947 from Siliman University (SU), she went to United States and earned credentials from the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop. But in 1950, she and her husband the eminent novelist Edilberto K. Tiempo returned to Dumaguete City to teach at the said University.

To promote the value of literature and creative writing in the country, the Tiempo’s has established the Siliman National Writers Workshop where it produced some of the country’s best writers.

In 1999, Dr. Edith L. Tiempo was proclaimed National Artist for Literature.

She passed away on August 21, 2011 at the age of 92.

PHLPost has printed 25, 000 copies of the commemorative stamp which are being sold at P12 each. The stamps were designed by PHLPost In-house graphic designer Victorino Z. Serevo.

Stamps and Official First Day Covers are now available at the Philatelic Counter, Manila Central Post Office, Liwasang Bonifacio 1000, Manila and in all postal areas of PHLPost.
