The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will participate in the annual Sandugo Festival to be held at the Bohol Cultural Center in Tagbilaran City, Bohol Province this coming July 23-27, 2018
The Sandugo Festival is an annual historical celebration that commemorates the Treaty of Friendship between Datu Sikatuna, a chieftain in Bohol, and Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The 16th century peace treaty occurred in 1565 through a blood compact or “sandugo”. It is considered an early seed of the Boholano culture.
This year’s festival also mark another milestone as it commemorates the 30th anniversary of the month-long celebration which was organized by the provincial government.
“We decided to bring these notable collections of cultural and tourism stamps in several places in the country for the appreciation of local and tourist visitors who frequently visit these destinations in order see the beauty and wonder of Filipino festivals and celebrations”, Postmaster General Joel Otarra said.
Tourists will be treated with wide collections of heritage and tourism stamps featuring the province’s Nuestra Senora Dela Asuncion commonly known as Dauis Church which is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. The church, which is considered a national cultural treasure, underwent many changes since its inception when Spanish missionaries arrived in 1697. On October 15, 2013 a devastating earthquake hit the Province of Bohol severely damaging centuries old churches including Dauis Church.
The church was featured in the 2018 Heritage Month: Philippine Colonial Churches issued by PHLPost. The province of Bohol - one of the prime tourist destination in the Philippines and the home of various tourist spots like, chocolate hills, tarsiers, and century - old churches established by the Spaniards when they discovered the island of the Philippines.
This year’s month-long festival also coincides with the Tigum Bol-Anon Tibuak Kalibutan (TBTK), a gathering of Boholanos all over the world which is held every 3 years. Aside from the stamp exhibit, some of the activities includes Kuradang Street Dancing, Flower and Garden Show, Bohalano Fashion Show, Ms. Bohol 2018 Pageant night and many more.
